Spoiler warning: This article contains details about the post-credits scene of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’.
The fourth instalment of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man series, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, follows Marvel tradition by including a post-credits scene that sets up the hero’s next chapter. The brief sequence shows Ned Leeds, Peter Parker’s best friend, holding a device designed to track Spider-Man. However, the tracker malfunctions, indicating that the web-slinger is no longer on Earth – and may even be outside his own universe. The scene ends with the classic on-screen text promising that the character “will return”, though it does not specify whether that return will come in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, ‘Secret Wars’ or a future solo project. Clips of the moment have already circulated on social media after early screenings in the United States.
The film picks up directly after the events of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’. Peter Parker is trying to rebuild his life in a world where nobody remembers him. His struggles with identity are compounded by glitches in his own superhuman abilities, which test his physical and emotional stability. For much of the runtime, suspicion falls on villains such as Scorpion, Tombstone and the Hand, but the third act delivers a twist that reveals the true threat. The story adopts a more grounded, street-level tone reminiscent of classic Spider-Man comics, rather than the large-scale multiversal events of the previous film.
The cast is led by Tom Holland as Peter Parker / Spider-Man and Zendaya as MJ, alongside Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, Sadie Sink, and Michael Mando as Mac Gargan. Two notable additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe appear: Jon Bernthal reprises his role as Frank Castle / The Punisher, and Mark Ruffalo returns as Bruce Banner / Hulk. Their involvement has generated considerable buzz among fans.
Beyond its storyline, ‘Brand New Day’ arrives with enormous commercial expectations. It has already broken the record for advance ticket sales in the United States, and industry forecasts suggest it could earn $800 million globally in its opening weekend. That figure would place it second only to ‘Avengers: Endgame’, which took $1.2 billion in its debut weekend in 2019. In the UK, the film opened in cinemas on Wednesday, a day earlier than the traditional Friday release, to take advantage of the summer holiday period.
Holland’s previous Spider-Man outings have all been box-office hits. ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ grossed $880 million in 2017, ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ crossed $1 billion in 2019, and ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, which featured the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, earned $1.921 billion in 2021, making it one of the highest-grossing films of all time. Analysts believe ‘Brand New Day’ could continue that upward trajectory, potentially reaching $2 billion worldwide.
The film’s strong ticket sales reflect a broader trend of audiences returning to cinemas after years of streaming dominance. For younger viewers who grew up with on-demand content, the theatrical experience has become a novelty – and Marvel’s Spider-Man films remain a powerful draw. With its post-credits tease and record-breaking start, ‘Brand New Day’ is poised to be one of the biggest cinematic events of the summer.
