FlyDubai Co-Pilot Attacked Captain in Cockpit, Passengers Restrained Him
A FlyDubai flight from Dubai to Israel was disrupted when the co-pilot attacked the captain in the cockpit. Passengers, including a Georgian Jewish dentist, restrained the attacker, who begged to be killed. Israeli officials believe the co-pilot, an Omani national, acted alone.
A FlyDubai flight from Dubai to Israel was thrown into chaos on Wednesday when the co-pilot attacked the captain inside the cockpit, prompting a group of passengers to intervene and restrain him. The incident occurred on flight FZ1073, which was travelling from the United Arab Emirates to Israel. According to multiple accounts, the co-pilot, identified by Israeli officials as an Omani national, assaulted the captain during the flight, leaving the captain injured and in need of medical attention.
One of the passengers who helped subdue the attacker was Shota Musaev, a Georgian Jewish dentist. Musaev described how the co-pilot, after being overpowered, repeatedly begged the passengers to kill him. «He was shouting ‘kill me, kill me’ as we held him down,» Musaev recounted. The dentist, who was on board with other travellers, said the scene was terrifying but that several passengers acted quickly to prevent further harm. The captain, who had been stabbed during the assault, was also pleading for help, according to Musaev.
Israeli security officials said their initial assessment indicated that the co-pilot was likely acting alone and that the attack was not part of a broader conspiracy. The co-pilot’s nationality, confirmed as Omani, has raised questions about how he passed security checks, but no further details about his motives have been released. The flight, which had departed from Dubai, was diverted or landed safely after the incident, though the exact sequence of events remains under investigation.
The attack has drawn attention to cockpit security and the potential for insider threats in commercial aviation. FlyDubai, a state-owned carrier based in the UAE, has not issued a detailed statement about the incident. Israeli authorities have launched a full investigation, and the injured captain is reported to be recovering. The passengers who intervened, including Musaev, have been praised for their bravery in preventing what could have been a far deadlier outcome.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the region and follows a series of security scares involving flights to and from Israel. While the co-pilot’s precise motivations remain unclear, officials have not linked the attack to any known extremist group. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected as authorities piece together the events that unfolded in the cockpit.
