Rockstar Games has confirmed that the map in Grand Theft Auto 6 will be twice the size of the one featured in Grand Theft Auto 5, ending years of speculation among players. The studio also revealed that the game world will be significantly more detailed, with a level of density and hand-crafted quality that it says surpasses anything it has previously produced.

The confirmation came in a cover feature with GameInformer, where Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut discussed the scale of the project. Grand Theft Auto 6 is set in Leonida, a fictionalised version of Florida, and fans had been estimating the map's size since the first teaser images were released. A fan project called GTA6 Mapping previously used two teaser trailers and various screenshots to calculate that the world would be roughly 2.7 times bigger than its 2013 predecessor. Rockstar has now confirmed the speculation was broadly accurate, stating the map is twice as large as that of Grand Theft Auto 5.

Garbut explained that the new world is different in its construction. He said the team obsessed over every part, from rooftops and alleys to building interiors and everything in between, reaching a critical mass with the number of interiors that makes buildings feel more real inside and out. According to Garbut, the world is a cohesive whole with a density of content and a hand-crafted quality to every bit.

Beyond the map size, Rockstar confirmed several other features. Grand Theft Auto 6 will include over 170 different animal species, a massive selection of clothing and accessories, and an advanced weather system that will occasionally cause hurricanes to tear through Leonida. These details add to the picture of a game that aims to deliver a more immersive and varied environment than its predecessor.

Garbut also addressed the pressure associated with the project, describing it as huge. He said the team dealt with that pressure by doing its best to overdeliver. Normally, he noted, developers compromise scale for detail or detail for interaction, but with this project they went the other way. Everything is dialled up: detail, scope, breadth, scale, interaction and density. He added that he does not think Rockstar has ever created anything close to this before.

The confirmation of the map size is likely to intensify anticipation for Grand Theft Auto 6, which is already one of the most awaited releases in the industry. The game's setting in a fictional Florida has drawn comparisons to the series' earlier outings, but Rockstar is promising a world that is both larger and more intricately crafted. The inclusion of a dynamic weather system with hurricanes suggests that environmental conditions will play a more prominent role in gameplay than in previous titles.

Meanwhile, a resurfaced leak has some fans convinced that Rockstar's next project will be a sequel to the 2011 detective adventure title L.A. Noire. That speculation remains unconfirmed and separate from the official details about Grand Theft Auto 6. For now, the studio's focus appears to be on delivering the expanded and detailed world of Leonida, with the map size and feature set representing a significant step up from Grand Theft Auto 5.
