Four men have been taken to hospital and seven people have been arrested after a stabbing on Bromley High Street in south-east London, emergency services have said. One of the victims is understood to be in a critical condition.

The London Ambulance Service was called to reports of a stabbing on the busy high street at 2.19pm on Thursday. Ambulance crews, including an air ambulance, were dispatched to the scene, alongside officers from the Metropolitan Police.

Police said the incident involved an altercation on the high street in which four men were stabbed. Seven men have been arrested in connection with the attack. Their ages and any possible charges have not yet been confirmed.

The high street was cordoned off as emergency services worked at the scene, with a significant police presence remaining in the area into the afternoon and evening. The road was closed to traffic and pedestrians while investigators examined the scene.

Witnesses described a scene of panic as the violence broke out in the middle of the day on one of Bromley's main shopping streets. The area is typically busy with shoppers, office workers and families, and the timing of the incident meant many members of the public were nearby.

The condition of the four victims has not been fully disclosed, though at least one man is reported to be fighting for his life. The others are believed to have sustained stab wounds and are receiving treatment in hospital.

The Metropolitan Police have not yet commented on a possible motive or whether the people involved were known to each other. Inquiries are continuing, and officers have appealed for anyone with information or footage of the incident to come forward.

Bromley High Street is a major retail and transport hub in the borough of Bromley, in the south-east of the capital. The street is home to a large number of shops, cafes and offices, and sits close to Bromley South railway station, one of the busiest commuter stations in the area.

The incident is the latest in a series of violent attacks on London's high streets that have raised concerns about knife crime in the capital. Emergency services have repeatedly urged the public to avoid the area while the investigation continues.

Local representatives and community figures are expected to seek reassurances about safety in the town centre following the attack. The full circumstances of the altercation remain under investigation, and police have not yet confirmed whether they are searching for any further suspects.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has mobile phone footage from the area around Bromley High Street on Thursday afternoon has been asked to contact the police. Information can also be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers.
