Russell Brand found guilty of rape and three sexual assaults at Southwark Crown Court
A jury at Southwark Crown Court has found comedian Russell Brand guilty on some of the charges against him, including rape.
The former comedian and actor Russell Brand has been found guilty on several counts by Southwark Crown Court in London. The jury convicted him of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. At the same time, Brand was acquitted of two further rape charges and one count of attempted sexual touching.
The rape conviction concerns a young fan who allegedly became a victim after a show in 2009. The remaining guilty verdicts relate to other alleged assaults. During the trial, the prosecution described Brand as a manipulative sexual predator. The allegations spanned roughly a decade and, according to the prosecution, included a hotel room, a bar toilet and his townhouse in London. Some of the alleged offences reportedly took place at workplaces, including a radio station and a television studio.
The trial lasted about three and a half weeks. Brand denied all the allegations. The accusations against him became public through a Channel 4 Dispatches documentary, after which a total of six women came forward with allegations of sexual misconduct. The case attracted considerable public attention long before the verdict was reached.
The available information does not state a date for sentencing. It is also unclear whether, and in what form, Brand will appeal. These points remain unresolved for now.
