The trial of comedian Russell Brand, who denies all charges, has begun at Southwark Crown Court. He is accused of offences against six women between 1999 and 2009.
Russell Brand's trial for rape and sexual assault has opened at Southwark Crown Court, where the 51-year-old comedian and actor is accused of offences against six different women between 1999 and 2009. Brand, who denies all charges, arrived at court on Wednesday morning ahead of the prosecution's opening of its case.
He was driven to the court building in a black Mercedes-Benz van, which parked directly outside the entrance where crowds of reporters and photographers had gathered. Brand waited inside the vehicle for around a minute before stepping out in a dark suit, a black and white striped shirt, a long white tie and sunglasses. He reached for his wife Laura Gallacher's hand before the pair walked together towards the court, in a brief public appearance that was captured by waiting media.
The prosecution is set to open its case against Brand, who faces allegations of groping women and forcing them into sexual acts. The charges relate to a period spanning a decade, from 1999 to 2009, during which Brand was a prominent figure in British entertainment, working as a comedian, broadcaster and actor. He has consistently denied all allegations against him.
The trial at Southwark Crown Court is expected to examine detailed evidence concerning the six women who have brought complaints. Brand's wife, Laura Gallacher, has accompanied him to court, and the couple were photographed hand-in-hand as they arrived. The case has drawn significant public and media attention, reflecting Brand's high profile in the UK and internationally.
Proceedings are continuing, with the prosecution's opening statement expected to set out the allegations in full. Brand is represented in court and has entered not guilty pleas to all charges. The trial is being heard by a jury at Southwark Crown Court.
