Avanti West Coast will be nationalised next year, the UK government has confirmed, in a move that will bring the troubled West Coast Main Line operator under public ownership. The franchise, which connects London with major cities including Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow and Edinburgh, will be taken over by the state-owned operator of last resort in 2026.

The decision follows sustained criticism of Avanti's performance, with passengers enduring widespread cancellations, delays and reduced timetables in recent years. The Department for Transport had already placed the operator on a short-term contract extension while it assessed the franchise's future. Nationalisation will see the service brought into public control when the current agreement expires.

Avanti West Coast is a joint venture between FirstGroup and Trenitalia, which have operated the route since December 2019. The franchise has faced repeated problems, including a significant reduction in services during the pandemic and subsequent staffing disputes. In 2022, the government issued a six-month emergency contract extension to keep trains running, and further extensions followed as performance failed to meet targets.

The move forms part of a wider shift in UK rail policy. The government has signalled its intention to renationalise passenger services as existing contracts end, creating a simpler, more accountable system. Under these plans, the operator of last resort, which already runs several franchises including LNER and Northern, will assume control of Avanti when the current contract lapses.

Passenger groups have broadly welcomed the prospect of public ownership, arguing that it could lead to more reliable services and greater transparency. However, critics question whether nationalisation alone will resolve deep-rooted issues such as infrastructure constraints, industrial relations and rolling stock availability. The West Coast Main Line is one of Europe's busiest mixed-use railways, carrying both long-distance passenger trains and heavy freight.

Avanti West Coast has not yet commented on the nationalisation plans. The transition is expected to take place without immediate changes to timetables or staffing, though the operator of last resort will review service levels and performance targets once it takes over. The government has said passengers should see no disruption during the handover.

The nationalisation will be closely watched by the rail industry, as it tests whether public ownership can deliver tangible improvements on a complex, high-profile route. It also raises questions about the future of other franchises and the role of private operators in the UK's railways. For now, the focus will be on ensuring a smooth transfer and addressing the reliability issues that have plagued Avanti since its inception.
